Terms of Service

Last updated 4 September 2026

The short version: you must be 18 or older, keep track of your books, be decent to other members, don't upload things that aren't yours, and understand that this is a small service run by a small operation rather than a bank.

1. What this is

My To Be Read is a place to keep a reading list, share it with people you choose, and recommend books to other members. Using it means you accept these terms. If you don't accept them, don't use it.

2. Your account

3. What you put here

Your shelf is yours. Your books, notes, reviews and recommendations belong to you and we claim no ownership of them.

By posting to a public part of the service — Community Recs, or a shelf you share by link — you give us permission to display it there. That permission ends when you delete it, though it may persist in a backup for up to 60 days.

Only upload things you have the right to upload. Cover art you scanned from a book you own is one thing; republishing a photographer's work is another.

4. What not to do

We can remove content and close accounts that break these rules. For anything serious we will do it without warning.

5. Other people's content

Recommendations and comments come from members, not from us. We don't check them before they appear and we don't endorse them. If something is wrong or abusive, report it through the contact page.

Where the service features a book influencer, we describe publicly available information about them and link to their own pages. That is not a partnership and does not imply they endorse us.

6. Copyright complaints

If something here infringes your copyright, write to us through the contact page with enough detail to identify the work and where it appears on the site, and we will remove it. Repeat infringers lose their accounts.

7. Availability

We will try to keep the service up, but we don't promise it. It may be down for maintenance, break, or lose data. Keep your own copy of anything you would be upset to lose — the app can export your shelf, and there is a backups panel inside it.

We may change or withdraw features. If we ever shut the service down we will give notice and a way to take your data with you.

8. No warranty

The service is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. Book details come from public databases and from automated reading of images; they are often wrong in small ways and we don't guarantee any of it.

9. Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from your use of the service, including lost data. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

10. Closing your account

You can close it at any time through the contact page. We can close an account that breaks these terms. Either way, your content is removed, subject to the backup period in the privacy policy.

11. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change matters we will say so on the site. Carrying on using the service after that means you accept the new version.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of law rules.

13. Contact

Anything at all: the contact page.
